Module 1: Python Foundations

Installing Python and Your First Program

Before you can write a single useful program, you need a working Python installation and a comfortable place to type code. Many beginners lose days fighting with setup, so this lesson walks you through it carefully. By the end you will have Python installed, a code editor ready, and your first program running on your own computer.

What Python is and why it is worth learning

Python is a general purpose programming language. It is used for automating office tasks, building websites, analysing data, writing scripts that talk to other systems, and much more. Its syntax is designed to be readable, which makes it a good first language. The skills you build here (thinking in steps, breaking problems down, reading error messages) carry over to every other language you learn later.

Python code is run by a program called the interpreter. When you "run a Python file", the interpreter reads your code line by line from top to bottom and carries out each instruction. So installing Python really means installing the interpreter.

Questions and answers.

How do EMFAD courses work?

Every course is a set of written lessons you study at your own pace. Each lesson ends with a practical exercise to do straight away and a short list of key points. Each module ends with a quiz, and the course ends with a final project that pulls everything together. When you finish, you receive a certificate of completion from EMFAD Courses.

Are there videos or live classes?

No. EMFAD courses are written, self-paced lessons with practical exercises. There are no videos, no live classes and no fixed timetable, so you can study on any device, on a slow connection and whenever suits you.

Can I read a lesson before I buy?

Yes. The first lesson of every available course is free to read without an account. Open any course page and choose Read the first lesson free.

How long is a course?

Each course page shows an estimate such as about 8 hours. We calculate it from the real lessons: reading time at 200 words a minute, plus 15 minutes for each exercise, 10 minutes for each module quiz and an hour for the final project, rounded to the nearest hour.
